1. What is johngarger.com all about?

Johngarger.com serves two purposes. First, this is a website where I publish articles on writing better academic publications. These publications include journal articles, conference papers, research reports, dissertations, theses, book chapters, books, and book reviews. Second, this website serves as the face of my copy editing and coaching services. I offer assistance as a coach, copy editor, proofreader, and mock journal reviewer specializing in academic, peer reviewed, and scholarly publications and research studies.

2. What services do you offer?

I offer coaching, copy editing, proofreading, and mock journal review services to researchers, students, and other authors who publish or wish to publish manuscripts in scholarly and peer reviewed journals. I also specialize in assisting graduate students who need help with their dissertations and theses. For more complete coverage of the services I offer, please visit the Services page.

3. Can I get a free quote before I commit to your services?

Yes! I always offer a free quote to all of my clients. Visit the Free Quote page and send me a message letting me know your particular needs. I typically return free quotes within 24 hours of receiving your manuscript.

4. How are you qualified to edit my academic manuscript?

Unlike other copy editors you could hire, I am an author and publisher of scholarly and peer reviewed journal articles. I also present my findings at regional and national academic conferences. Rather than sit on the sidelines, I prefer to be a part of the journal publishing process so I can truly understand what academic authors go through. I am also a feature editor at a peer reviewed journal and serve as a reviewer for four journals and an annual conference. For more on my qualifications, please visit the About Me page.

5. Why do you charge by the hour?

There are three ways a copy editor can charge for services: by the page, by the word, and by the hour. I find that by the hour is the fairest method for all concerned. Here’s why: If someone comes to me with a manuscript that is in desperate need of editing, it will take me much longer to edit that paper than a manuscript that needs only light editing. It isn’t fair to charge these two individuals the same price based on the length of the manuscript (by the page or by the word). By charging an hourly rate, the client pays for the amount of work needed on the manuscript and not an arbitrary amount based on manuscript length.

6. Do you give discounted rates to some clients?

Yes! Students always qualify for a discounted rate based on the conditions found on the Pricing and Terms page. I am also open to offering other discounts on a client by client basis. It never hurts to ask so go ahead and ask!

7. How can I learn more about you?

To learn more about me, visit the About Me page. If you still have questions, visit the Contact Me page and send me a message.

8. Can I recommend a topic for you to cover on your site?

Yes!  If there is a topic you would like to see covered on johngarger.com, visit the Contact Me page and send me a message noting what topics you would like to see published.

9. Can I write an article for johngarger.com?

The articles published on johngarger.com are written solely by me. I do not outsource the articles published here or rely on others to provide content for this site. Consequently, I do not accept unsolicited manuscripts for publication on the site. Consider setting up your own website and if your content is similar to mine, I will be happy to link to it!

10. What does the future hold for johngarger.com?

I am in the process of creating a series of online seminars on conducting research and publishing scholarly manuscripts. I am particularly interested in developing a seminar especially for doctoral students. Stay tuned for announcements.
